New York, South Carolina to consider gambling bills
Lawmakers in New York and South Carolina are set to run the rule over two new bills that have been introduced in each of the states in an effort to expand their respective gambling markets.
In New York, five State Senate Democrats have put forward S01282, which is focused on legalising professional and college sports betting inside casinos, racetracks and off-track betting facilities in the state.
The bill has now been passed on to the Senate’s judiciary committee for further consideration.
Meanwhile, South Carolina State Representative Todd Rutherford has introduced House Joint Resolution H3102, which seeks to legalise various forms of gambling in the state, including sports betting.
Rutherford is a long-time advocate of an expanded gambling market in South Carolina and has put forward similar legislation in the past without success.
However, neither bill will progress further unless the US Supreme Court reconsiders a federal ban on sports betting outside of Nevada.
New Jersey is in the process of appealing to the Supreme Court after lower courts rejected the state’s plan to establish a regulated sports betting market.
Confirmation of the bills comes as Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg recently announced that she will introduce legislation to legalise online gambling in the state.
