Namco opens Vancouver studio
Game developer Namco Bandai has opened a new studio in the Canadian city of Vancouver that will focus on developing mobile and online games for the North American market.
About 30 people will work in the studio, which has been in the pipeline for a year, according to the Vending Times website.
Namco Bandai Studios president Hajime Nakatani said that Vancouver had edged out fellow Canadian cities such as Montreal and Toronto as the home of the studio due to the city’s “cluster” of digital artists and engineers.
Minister of international trade, Ed Fast, told the Vancouver Sun newspaper that he had met Namco executives during a trade mission to Japan six months ago.
“(We) again drove home the fact that Canada is a place that should be their gateway into North America ... clearly they listened,” Fast said. “Hopefully the success they experience right here in Vancouver will translate to further job opportunities right across the country.”
