Perform Group closes in on Opta Sports Data
British digital sports media specialist Perform Group is reportedly at an advanced stage in negotiations to purchase sports statistics supplier Opta Sports Data from venture-capital backer Albion Capital for approximately £40 million.
According to a report from The Daily Telegraph newspaper, a deal for the firm that counts BSkyB, USA Today and the National Basketball Association (NBA) among its clients is expected ‘within the next couple of months’.
Established by Toby Russell in 1996 as Sportingstatz, London-based Opta Sports Data reported turnover of £10.8 million for the year to the end of July alongside a pre-tax profit of £345,000. Venture capital firm Close Ventures took a stake in the company in 2008 but was soon acquired by Albion Capital. Russell also operates news website Sports.com and website and applications design firm Coreware.
Feltham-based Perform Group is the operator of the LiveSport.tv on-demand and live sports video application recently integrated on Facebook along with the Goal.com website and signed a deal in March that is to see it spend an initial consideration of £1.68 million in order to acquire leading Dutch sports site Voetbalzone.nl.
