Portugal was able to generate €82.2m ($92.1m) in online gaming revenue during the first 10 months of regulated service in the country.

Published by national gambling regulator Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), the results reflect the period from late May 2016 through to March 31, 2017.

Sports betting was responsible for 70% of total online gambling revenue in the period, with this form of activity generating €57.6m in the first 10 months of full regulation.

However, results for the first quarter of this year show a slight decline in online sports betting, with the €17.4m collected in the three months to March 31 down from €18m in the final quarter of 2016 and the €22.2m in Q3 of last year.

Meanwhile, casino games including online poker, made up the remaining portion of revenue in the period, although this type of gambling has only been available since late July when the SRIJ issued its first casino licence.

In contrast to the drop in sports betting activity in Q1 of this year, revenue from online casino improved by more than a half to €13.9m in the period.

The SRIJ report added that online slot machines were responsible for 34% of the internet casino sector, with cash game poker generating 23.7% of revenue and tournament poker 9%.
