Omni-channel betting platform provider OpenBet has revealed that it processed 62,000 bets each minute of the Grand National last week, handling a total of 22 million wagers at the UK horseracing event.

The record figures came during the supplier’s busiest 24-hour period of the year, with punters both in the UK and overseas betting on the biggest event on the UK horseracing calendar, which took place on April 9.

OpenBet processed a total of 60.5 million account transactions, up 14% on last year, while 75% of all bets were place via mobile devices, an increase on 63% in 2015.

Last month, OpenBet also announced record figures for the Cheltenham Festival, with the firm handling 31 million bets during the four-day horseracing event.

Jeremy Thompson-Hill, chief executive of OpenBet, said: “The Grand National is a critical event for our customers; it places huge demands on our industry and once again we have shown that OpenBet has the ability to handle the most important events seamlessly.

“I am both thrilled and proud of our performance – a peak of 62,000 bets per minute and total of 22 million bets in 24 hours demonstrates the vast scale of our business and the power of our technology.

“It enabled our customers to offer the quality of service and experience that players demand.”
