Danish regulator Spillemyndigheden has reported that online gaming activities are now responsible for more than half of gambling revenue in the country.

In its annual report, the organisation said the online gaming market accounted for 51.5% of total gambling revenue for 2017, up from 47.4% in the previous year.

Overall gambling revenue in Denmark for the past year amounted to DKK9.2bn (€1.24bn/$1.53bn), with lotteries the main source of income after generating DKK3.1bn.

Sports betting across both the land-based and online markets was ranked as the second-highest contributor with DKK2.3bn in revenue, up 7.4% on the previous year, while online casino revenue jumped 15.5% year-on-year to DKK1.8bn.

Revenue from gaming machines outside of casinos dropped 1% to DKK1.49bn, while land-based casino revenue remained relatively flat at DKK375m.

Other key findings in the report include Danish consumers spending an average of  DKK38.50 on gaming products each week, while 50% of those that bet online are male and aged under 35.

Spillemyndigheden also found Denmark is one of the highest-spending countries when it comes to average gambling spend across betting and casino games.

Measured according to gross gaming revenue per capita, Denmark ranks third for betting and casino games, but only places 13th for lotteries.
