Marathon has launched an online sports betting platform in Russia.

According to Calvin Ayre, the online gambling operator has held a local licence in the country for some time now, and the new Marathonbet.ru platform will boost its presence within Russia.

Marathonbet.ru will be the 12th online sports betting site to launch in the country with approval from the national government.

Customers that want to use the new service will be required to register at one of Marathon’s retail outlets in Russia, although the company only currently has sites in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The move comes after rival brand bwin last month also revealed plans to launch an online sports betting platform in Russia.

Gambling operators that are licensed to operate in the country must process all customer payments through ‘TSUPIS’, centralised hubs approved by the Russian government.
