Italy: May revenues up 19% on 2016, bet365 widens lead in betting
Exclusive iGB-Ficom Leisure estimates show Italy gambling market grew 19% year-on-year from €103m to €123m in May, driven by online casino and sports betting.
The regulated Italian gambling market grew 19% year-on-year from €103m to €123m in May, driven by online casino and sports betting, according to estimates exclusively provided to iGaming Business by leading gaming sector advisory firm Ficom Leisure.
Revenue from the largest online segment of casino, representing more than half of the market last month, increased from €35m to €46m year-on-year, with sports betting gross gaming revenues (GGR) from Italian-regulated operators across remote and retail channels rising from €55m to €62m over the same period.

However total revenues from the dot.it market in May were down 41% on the prior month due to a huge Champions League-related spike in sports betting volumes in April, which saw more than €1bn generated in total wagers and close to €150m in GGR.
According to Christian Tirabassi, senior partner at Ficom: “The explanation for the high sport betting GGR in April is that the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals took place in April hence more bets were placed by the players. The semi-finals took place in May, however due to the favourable outcome of the matches for the bettors, the GGR generated by the operators was lower.”
In online-only sports betting, for which iGaming Business has obtained estimates for the last two months, GGR in May reached €29m, compared to €33m from retail.
Bet365 retained its lead as the leading operator in Italian online sports betting, well head of SNAI.
In online casino, Lottomatica stayed marginally ahead of Sisal and PokerStars, the latter predictably commanding an unassailable lead in tournament poker and in cash games.
