WPT Creates Slovakian Event
06 July 2009

World Poker Tour (WPT) Enterprises Incorporated has signed a deal with the Slovak Poker Sport Federation to create an event for the Eastern European nation scheduled for next month in the capital city, Bratislava.
In Europe, the WPT is competing against the European Poker Tour, which recently announced details for the first half of its sixth season of action with new stops for both Russia and Portugal, and is keen to establish a foothold on the continent.
The WPT’s first tournament of its kind in Eastern Europe, the Slovakia event will be a €4,400 deep stack main event held from August 31 to September 4 at the Herna Golden Vegas Casino in Bratislava. The event will be part of the Central European Summer Poker Championship, which will begin on August 26, and be played through the WPT Slovakian tournament.
“The Slovak Poker Sport Federation is delighted to be associated with a top brand like the WPT in the creation of this unique and attractive event in the territory of Central and Eastern Europe,” said Dag Palovic, President for the Slovak Poker Sport Federation.
“With the creation of WPT Slovakia, we intend to emphasise Bratislava’s attributes as a highly desirable destination for all poker players.”
This latest agreement brings the total number of non-US WPT tournaments to five. In addition to Slovakia, the WPT has also operated an event in Spain for two years while it premiered a new tournament in May for Italy at the Casino Di Venezia. Its other international events include a Cyprus tournament scheduled to run from September 6 to 12 at the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel And Casino while its WPT Marrakech will take place from October 12 to19 in Morocco.
“WPT Slovakia is a unique and exciting addition to the WPT‘s expanding international tournament offering,” said Steve Lipscomb, Chief Executive Officer for the WPT.
“We have found a great partner in the Slovak Poker Sport Federation, who are truly dedicated to growing the sport of poker in the Central and Eastern European territory.”
