Betware targeting Massachusetts

With the neighbouring state of New Hampshire considering launching online lottery games, Icelandic software services firm Betware has announced that it is pushing a proposal that would bring Internet gambling to the Massachusetts State Lottery.

The Reykjavik-based firm revealed that it is targeting Massachusetts for its first US online gambling operation and has met with officials of the Lottery and state lawmakers to discuss a pilot project in order to test the concept.

“We believe they are the best fit,” said Stefan Hrafnkelsson, Chief Executive Officer for Betware.

“They are innovative. They have the technical expertise.”

According to a report from The Enterprise newspaper, Hrafnkelsson revealed that online gambling would be an effective way for the Lottery to expand its customer base to include a younger generation of gamblers.

However, any deal is a long way off with the Lottery stating that it doesn’t have any plans to move forward with the concept at this time despite meeting with executives from Betware in March. For his part, Hrafnkelsson said that some sort of approval would also be needed from the state’s Legislature.
